Theater as Digital Object Model (or vice-versa?)

January 15th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

I’ve just been reading an article about Digital Object Models–I know, fun, right? I came across this line:

“A representation may be considered a defined expression of part or all of the essential characteristics of the content.”

I was struck by this definition. How much it relates, I think, to an Aristotelian thought on theater. That theater is supposed to be a representation of an action that has already occurred. And theater is often a “defined expression” of one thing or another. Thus, the elegance of this definition for digital object models for theater as well. All that needs be replaced is the word “content”.

“A representation may be considered a defined expression of part or all of the essential characteristics of Oedipus.”

I don’t know. Maybe more on the “all of the essential characteristics” side of things, rather than the “part” side. But still an interesting serendipitous moment.
